Luxury is traditionally associated with excessive consumption and wastefulness, but the changing societal and environmental landscape calls for a redefinition of luxury that aligns with sustainable development goals. The research delves into the evolving definition of luxury in interior design, considering contemporary needs and demands in luxury hospitality. The main approach involves qualitative analysis of literature and interviews with industry professionals, including interior designers, architects, guest relations experts, tour operators, and marketers. The study also explores established and emerging interior design and architectural strategies for sustainable hospitality. A new definition of luxury, one that embraces sustainability, is proposed and analyzed to understand its implementation in hospitality design. The thesis then presents carefully selected examples of hospitality types suitable for sustainability-oriented luxury. A design project for a high-end hotel, integrating strategies and solutions from the research, is presented in chapter 5. This practical approach aims to demonstrate how luxury hospitality can be designed sustainably while providing exclusivity and comfort. In conclusion, the thesis summarizes its findings and implications for the hospitality industry's sustainable development. By redefining luxury in interior design and embracing sustainability, this research seeks to contribute to a more responsible and environmentally conscious luxury hospitality sector.
