Item Restricted Small Living : a Housing Option for Young Adults(2023) Hanna Baldauf; Brünjes, Katrin; Köknar, Sait Ali; Faculty of Architecture and Design; Berlin International University of Applied SciencesAI-GENERATED ABSTRACT: Abstract: As the world's population grows and urbanization rises, housing has become a critical concern, particularly for young adults pursuing education or starting their careers. Germany, with the highest number of single-person households in Europe, faces the challenge of catering to the diverse needs of this group, which includes students, young professionals, single parents, and elderly individuals living alone. Small living spaces, defined as dwellings under 400 square feet, present a potential solution by offering affordable and sustainable housing options. However, this concept comes with challenges and opportunities that require exploration to make it a viable choice for young adults. This bachelor's thesis aims to investigate the possibilities of creating sustainable, practical, and affordable small-living options for young adults, addressing their housing needs and preferences. The thesis will delve into the definition and historical development of small living, examining current challenges and opportunities associated with it. The research will be structured into five chapters, covering the comprehensive understanding of small living, theoretical frameworks, a design project for small living spaces, and concluding with key findings, implications, and recommendations. The first chapter will define small living, explore its historical development, and analyze challenges and opportunities. The second chapter will establish the theoretical framework by discussing young adults' housing needs and preferences and exploring design considerations for small living spaces. The third chapter will present a design project based on the research conducted. The final chapter will summarize key findings, reflect on challenges and opportunities, and provide implications and recommendations for addressing the increasing demand for affordable and sustainable housing options for young adults. Keywords: Small Living, Housing Options, Young Adults, Sustainability, Design Considerations, Affordable Housing
