Item Restricted Exploring Elements of Typography and Layout on the Web Magazines : A Prespective to Identify Componenets of Typography and Layout on the Web(2022) Erika Febriani Indra; Ewers, Felix; Hinze, Martin; Faculty of Architecture and Design; Berlin International University of Applied SciencesAI-GENERATED ABSTRACT: Abstract: The development of internet access and technology has significantly impacted how people consume news, with a substantial increase in online readership compared to traditional print formats. This shift has also affected the workflow of graphic designers and web developers, creating a need for collaboration and shared knowledge between the two disciplines. Bridging the gap between design and development is crucial to ensure visual elements align with designers' visions and address challenges related to page element alignment, browser compatibility, and mobile responsiveness. This thesis aims to explore the intersection between graphic/web design and web development, focusing on typography and layout in web magazines. The research draws on existing literature, including studies on typography's role in website design and the importance of art direction for enhancing user engagement. Previous research in Swedish has explored typography's impact on website headings and the readability of typographical elements on mobile devices. However, this thesis seeks to contribute to the field from the perspective of a visual communication scholar, offering insights and recommendations for website designers. The scope of the thesis encompasses web magazines accessed on desktops and smartphones, given their popularity as primary internet connection devices. Emphasis will be placed on texts and readability in web magazine design. The methodology involves secondary research to examine historical backgrounds, literature reviews on magazines and the web, and the role of graphic design. The thesis delves into the evolution of typography on the web, including its historical context, followed by an exploration of web layout components. A case study of the web magazine Kinfolk will be conducted to analyze its typography and layout across desktop and mobile platforms. Additionally, interviews with web designers and developers will provide further insights into web typography and layout practices, informing subsequent chapters and a design project.
