Item Restricted Assessing the Role of Multinationals at the Bottom of the Pyramid : a Case study from Colombia(2023) Hector Hernan Gomez Barajas; Ippendorf, Niko; Ülker, Barış; Faculty of Business Administration; Berlin International University of Applied SciencesAI-GENERATED ABSTRACT: Abstract: This thesis aims to analyze the role of multinational companies in Colombia in developing opportunities for individuals living in poverty from a Bottom of the Pyramid (B.O.P) perspective. It examines two Colombian multinational companies, Quala S.A. and Meals de Colombia S.A.S., to assess whether they effectively implement the B.O.P approach and provide opportunities for impoverished individuals to develop small businesses and earn income. The research also explores the current stage of B.O.P. evolution in Colombia and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on poverty alleviation efforts. The case study utilizes a multiple case study methodology, incorporating interviews with company employees, directors, and experts to gain insights into the initiatives and perspectives of the companies involved. The findings reveal a need for more consensus among interviewees regarding developing opportunities for impoverished people and fostering entrepreneurial creativity. This suggests that multinational companies in Colombia may need to be more effective in creating opportunities for poor individuals from a B.O.P. perspective. The COVID-19 pandemic has likely impacted the B.O.P. evolution in Colombia, presenting additional challenges for impoverished individuals. The case study highlights the critical issue of informality and the lack of proper compensation for street sellers exacerbated by the pandemic. Addressing informality and ensuring fair compensation for street sellers are crucial steps towards promoting inclusivity and providing sustainable opportunities within the B.O.P framework. The case study emphasizes the importance of assessing the depth and effectiveness of companies' initiatives, considering ethical considerations, and addressing systemic problems such as informal employment and social inequalities. It suggests that businesses shift their focus from short-term solutions to comprehensive strategies that guarantee impoverished individuals' economic rights and social well-being. Collaboration among the private sector, government, and civil society is crucial for achieving meaningful and sustainable poverty alleviation. iii The findings of this case study contribute to the understanding of the role of multinationals in poverty alleviation efforts, shedding light on the complexities and implications involved. It calls for transparent and clear actions from companies, collaboration among stakeholders, and comprehensive approaches that consider social, economic, and environmental dimensions to uplift individuals at the socioeconomic pyramid's base effectively.
