Item Restricted Interactive exhibition design as a way of promoting intercultural dialogue : the duality of the effects of coronavirus on society(2020) Alves, Tatiana Carolina Pereira; Hillmann-Regett, Jan; Lehr, Jakob; bachelor thesis in Product Design"This thesis explores the concept of stereotypes, how they form and develop to understand and propose ways to overcome them. Understanding the problem's roots and its potential solutions makes it possible to answer the research question: are interactive design exhibitions an effective means to help overcome stereotypes and prejudice by promoting intercultural dialogue? As a result of the research and its posterior analysis, a design project was developed to demonstrate the main findings and propose an effective stereotype breaking model based on dialogue. In light of the recent events involving the COVID-19 pandemic, this work covers the theme of prejudice, stereotypes, and communication also related to this crisis."Item Restricted The Atmospheric Qualities of Interior Design : The Architectural Theory Concept of Atmosphere and its Effect on Our Senses in Contemporary Gallery Interiors(2021) Dirbas, Mageeda; Goodwin, Amara; Larsen, Sigurd; Interior DesignMACHINE-GENERATED SUMMARY NOTE : We experience spaces through our senses. The feelings experienced during our journey in interior spaces make us think, how are these feelings created? What architectural practices helped produce these feelings? The answer to those questions is the atmosphere of the space. The atmosphere in interior design is a discipline that many architecture theorists discussed. This study will look into the concept of atmosphere and the discussion of architectural theory through the works of Peter Zumthor, Juhani Pallasmaa, and Gernot Böhme. Furthermore, the research will discuss the atmospheric qualities of contemporary gallery interiors. Since a gallery atmosphere is a big challenge for designers where galleries have special conditions to work with, the study will look at the history and architectural typology of art galleries. Also, it will explore the concept of adaptive reuse of churches and how to convert them into galleries by looking into examples. The thesis will work and analyze three case studies; each of them has its atmosphere characteristic. It will also show how to find and explore the essential elements in constructing atmospheric design to improve the overall aesthetics experience. Finally, after finding the most used architectural practices in building atmosphere, the research will exemplify a design project that uses these methods to convert a church to a gallery spaceItem Restricted The incomplete story : preservation and future usage of abandoned buildings in Berlin as human cultural heritage : the Eisfabrik example(2018) Awad, Mohammed; Martín, Javier; Pöğün-Zander, Yüksel; Faculty of Architecture and Design; Berlin International University of Applied Sciences"The abandoned buildings of Berlin are part of the human cultural heritage that carries the story of the city and this part of human history. The fast-growing city and the influence of modern, global human problems necessitate new ways of dealing with buildings and neglected urban spaces. The Incomplete Story is a study that deals with human cultural heritage as one universal issue. The aim of this study is to provide an example of how to re-use an abandoned building based on human cultural practices that can have a positive impact on cities and the connections between nations. This is achieved through presenting a proposed design for The Eisfabrik as an example. The methods used in the thesis are theoretical research into human cultural heritage and preservation and restoration methods, followed by a case study on three contemporary examples of the re-use of buildings that have had a significant impact on their cities and human cultural heritage. The results show that turning the Eisfabrik into a Live Museum will have an outstanding positive impact on the city and on humanity. As it connects humans and places together. It also shows that studying buildings can be a point of inspiration regarding future usage and create a cultural spot that works complementarily with the city story and the community. The thesis also shows that the Eisfabrik has the potential to be nominated for the World Heritage list. Future research, and further methods to achieve this great step, are recommended in order to rescue the Eisfabrik and create a new landmark and cultural attraction in Berlin."Item Restricted The new stage : use of scenographic means for performance, installation and exhibition design(2020) Balas, Arina Nicolae; Pöğün-Zander, Yüksel; Starck, Adrian von; bachelor thesis in Interior Design"This paper seeks to define a potential practice for converting spaces into stages and to establish to what extent, from a designers' point of view, can the know-hows of scenography positively exert influence on exhibition design, installation, and performance art. My goal is to study how the practice of staging has adapted to new fields of design and to analyze the contemporary approaches to stage. My objective is to launch a revitalized intellectual dialogue between different disciplines on how the use of scenographic characteristics may affect the qualities of distinct design spheres. I consider that this research will potentially provide answers about the artistic expectations of the contemporary audience and its response to the modifications that occur to such and everchanging subject like culture and art. Therefore, an analysis of design factors and visual challenges is necessary to help develop a better understanding of what the contemporary stage could be. This can then be implemented on the design of various performative shows, with the hope that it will produce a positive shift in the industry."
