Publication Restricted Concept Car Exhibitions as Museums of the Future: Representational Spaces in the Context of Space Age Aesthetics(2025) Kaynakci, Sivan; Köknar, Sait Ali; Dreyer, Miriam; Interior Architecture/Interior Design (BA); Berlin International University of Applied SciencesABSTRACT This thesis explores the architectural potential of Space Age aesthetics with the concept of car museum. Originating in 1950s, Space Age aesthetics were born from the cultural and technological atmosphere of the space race, expressing futuristic ideals through synthetic materials, fluid forms, and symbolic abstractions. In spite of its profound influence on design disciplines, the integration of this aesthetic into exhibition architecture, notably within automotive display environments, has remained limited. Positioned at the intersection of speculative design and spatial narrative, this study examines how concept cars, as object of technological imagination might be exhibited in environments, reflect their visionary essence. Rather than relying on conventional case studies the research draws form selected examples to uncover visual strategies, material tendencies, and spatial narratives aligned with Space Age design. The Project sites in BerlinOberschöneweied establishes a historical link with AEG’s early automotive innovations, creating a meaningful continuity between the past and imagined futures. Adopting a research, through a design methodology, theoretical analysis is translated into a spatial proposition that centers on spatial atmosphere, spatial intensity, and thematic coherence. In conclusion, the thesis exclaims a design framework wherein structure and content are integrated conceptually and formally. The museum is re-imagined not only as an exhibition venue but as a performative environment that reactivates Space Age aesthetics for contemporary audiences as well.Publication Restricted Re-enchanting Reality(2025) Todd, Léonie M.; Brünjes, Prof. Katrin; Interior Architecture/Interior Design (BA); Berlin International University of Applied SciencesThis thesis explores the intersection of Surrealism and narrative abstraction as a framework for interior design, proposing an alternative to maladaptive forms of escapism. In today’s uncertain world, Surrealism presents a compelling approach to confronting and reinterpreting reality. By analyzing Surrealism’s layered narrative approach, this research proposes a foundation for designing interiors that embrace diverse perspectives and encourage meaningful re-engagement with reality across various contexts. Through a comprehensive literature review, this thesis traces the philosophical, literary, and artistic foundations of Surrealism and examines its evolution into interior design. In parallel, it explores the development of narrative design, emphasizing its capacity for reframing spatial and societal perspectives. A visual analysis of selected interior designs by Carlo Mollino anchors this investigation, providing insights into the synthesis of Surrealism and narrative abstraction in interior spaces. Through the study of Mollino’s work, this research seeks to identify how surreal narrative abstraction can be applied to interiors in ways that encourage confrontation with reality instead of its avoidance in the form of maladaptive escapism. Carlo Mollino’s interiors reveal a recurring interplay between refuge and exposure, using surrealist narrative abstraction to invite shifts in perspective rather than offering pure escape. Through ambiguity, nonlinearity, temporal eclecticism, reflective surfaces, and material juxtapositions, Mollino’s designs disrupt rational expectations and reframe the interior as a space of re-interpretation and psychological agency. The interplay of Surrealism and narrative abstraction, exemplified in Carlo Mollino’s work, reposition interior design from a mere refuge to a tool for introspection and reorientation – offering an alternative to maladaptive escapism in navigating the uncertainties of the contemporary world.Publication Restricted The Narrative and Visual Communication of Interiors - Explored through the Role of Interiors in Film(2025) Schubert, Ann-Sophie; Tubles, John; Interior Architecture/Interior Design (BA); Berlin International University of Applied SciencesThe thesis looks into the narrative and visual communication of interior spaces. Both visual and narrative aspects are specifically analysed through the medium of film. Narrative devices themselves are highlighted through an introduction of the history of writing and visually influenced communication systems, followed by research into the dimensions of storytelling and their virtue. To bridge the gap between the literal approach of narrative and the motion-driven, often photorealistic depiction of narrative in film, a few key elements of graphical storytelling and other visual media that utilize narrative aspects, such as video games, are introduced. The format of film is first approached through internal devices, such as cinematic codes and set design, and then, together with different aspects of storytelling, compartmentalized into various approaches concerning interior design. Essentially, the experience of interior spaces in film is argued to be more than just a visual element but instead regarded as a contributing and integral part of the narrative, which undoubtedly influences an audience's understanding of plot and character development.
