Item Restricted Public Policies to Support Migrants Entrepreneurship : A Comparative Study of the United States and Germany(2022) Elvin Najafli; Koç, Hasan; Ülker, Barış; Faculty of Business Administration; Berlin International University of Applied SciencesAUTHOR-SUPPLIED ABSTRACT: Abstract: Immigration has always been one of the most critical impacts on the countries of the global world. Especially in developed nations such as European Union countries and the United States of America, controlling the flow of foreign-born arrivals, their integration processes, and their contribution to societies is incredibly significant. Currently, about 300 million individuals live in another country instead of their homes. There are many reasons behind leaving home and settling in different places. The most effective ones are security and economic well-being. The greatest migration flows have been observed after wars, financial crises, and geographical discoveries. As it is well known, the USA has been the country of immigration since other nations discovered the land. Also, Germany has hosted many migrants, especially after World War II, due to the exchange of people from former grounds of the country. Then, industrialization led governments to make new policies and hire people as guest workers from other countries. On the other hand, an essential hot topic in today's world, "entrepreneurship," has become more prevalent in recent decades. Many skilled and qualified individuals tend to create their businesses instead of being employed in regular jobs. Migrants share essential portions of those entrepreneurs in the world. Therefore, host countries make policies and regulations to have benefits from those people. Especially in the USA, the contribution of migrant entrepreneurs is very significant. That is the reason for the support provided by host countries in education, finance, networking, et cetera Developed countries realized the importance of migrant entrepreneurs in recent years and changed their policies accordingly. However, there are some obstacles in front of those people, and they should be solved to improve the success level of migrant entrepreneurship. The most important one is the visa problem. There is still no specific visa type for the individuals who desire to have their business in those countries. In this thesis work, the current policies of Germany (the EU countries) and the USA to promote and support migrant entrepreneurship were examined by secondary research. After explaining the history of immigration to those countries, the importance of immigrants in societies and supporting self-employment of entrepreneurship of foreign-born individuals were discussed. Further action plans that might contribute to the integration process of migrants who plan to have their own businesses were examined.
