Item Restricted Abandoned, Resistant, Revived. Strategies and challenges in the adaptive reuse of brutalist buildings Interiors(2024) Goyal, Ratik Rajiv; Ebert, Carola; Serdar-Köknar, Burcu; Faculty of Architecture and Design; Berlin International University of Applied SciencesAUTHOR-SUPPLIED ABSTRACT: This research thesis intends to bring about the discovery of challenges and strategies for the reuse of Brutalist buildings characterized by raw concrete and geometric forms that address contemporary needs and design standards. This thesis is invested in a qualitative literature review representing both early and late brutalism while researching the challenges and strategies of adaptive reuse. The further chapter is complemented by case studies for an in-depth analysis of the facts, findings, and answers to the research question. The comparative analyses of the successful and unsuccessful adaptive reuse projects that unraveled strategies to diffuse the inherent limitations of Brutalist structures will make up the cases. This thesis also presents a design project renewing Berlin's abandoned Bierpinsel Tower, an icon of late Brutalism. Nexustellar, the design project, provides a modern intervention with high-tech design, respecting the historical integrity of the structure by turning it into a vibrant experience space. This thesis contributes to the adaptive reuse discourse by understanding comprehensive strategies that will be necessary to integrate Brutalist buildings successfully into modern needs and changes. The thesis shows that careful and creative design will make sure that these architectural gems conserve and are remade for new functions, so that they maintain relevance in the 21st centuryItem Restricted Adaptive reuse of abandoned petrol stations(2024) Novotna, Alzbeta; Köknar, Sait Ali; Tubles, John; Faculty of Architecture and Design; Berlin International University of Applied SciencesItem Restricted An exploration of the sublime in Architecture : its sources and their role in the perception and design of spaces(2024) Yesli, Massil Yucef; Anwandter, Juan Almarza; Huneck, Karsten; Faculty of Architecture and Design; Berlin International University of Applied SciencesItem Restricted An interdisciplinary exploration of film and interior architecture : The role of interior architecture in Wes Anderson films(2024) Ashlock, India Marcella; Brünjes, Katrin; Starck, Adrian von; Faculty of Architecture and Design; Berlin International University of Applied SciencesItem Restricted Architecture and Satire. For thousands of years, human settlements have developed in harmony with the nature of the region. However, due to the increasing demand for tourism in the region, cave houses have been converted into hotels, and the unique texture of the region is under threat due to wrong design applications. Biophilic design is a design approach that aims to design places that harmonize with the natural environment by integrating nature and natural processes into the design. The ongoing problem of the Cappadocia region reveals the importance of biophilic design. The research aims to develop a harmonious interior design strategy that integrates with the natural environment, cultural texture, and characteristics of the region, instead of designs made without considering the environment of Cappadocia. In this context, this thesis investigates the potential of biophilic design in creating spaces that are compatible with the natural and cultural texture of Cappadocia and preserving these textures, and its potential application to the interior of a cave hotel. 4 Acknowledgement I would like to express my gratitude to my first advisor Prof. Amara Goodwin and my second examiner Prof. Yüksel Pöğün-Zander, who guided me with their valuable feedback throughout the research process. I would also like to express my gratitude to my family for their unconditional support, love, encouragement and sacrifices. 5Item Restricted Characteristics of Limestone, and its application in Interior Architecture and Design(2024) San Gregorio Fadon, Amaya; Brünjes, Katrin; Köknar, Sait Ali; Faculty of Architecture and Design; Berlin International University of Applied SciencesItem Restricted Creating wellness interior spaces using Wabi-Sabi principles(2024) Rosner, Emily Mariama; Köknar, Sait Ali; Tubles, John; Faculty of Architecture and Design; Berlin International University of Applied SciencesItem Restricted Design Strategies in Contexts of Destruction : Exploring Architectural Designed Strategies for Destroyed Buildings in Berlin Aiming to Preserve the City’s Identity with the Threat of GlobalizaYon and Urban Growth(2024) Escandon Scola, Sofia; Anwandter, Juan Almarza; Staudinger, Lukas; Faculty of Architecture and Design; Berlin International University of Applied SciencesItem Restricted Dynamic Adaptation of Architecture in response to societal and environmental events(2024) Rudașevschi, Yana; Aquilar, Giorgia; Fischer, Jeanne-Françoise; Faculty of Architecture and Design; Berlin International University of Applied SciencesItem Restricted Exploration of the celebration of architectural decay(2024) Toussaint, Brice Richard; Aquilar, Giorgia; Fischer, Jeanne-Françoise; Faculty of Architecture and Design; Berlin International University of Applied SciencesItem Restricted Exploring and understanding the Identity and Heritage of Berlin's U-Bahn stations in the context of contemporary revitalization projects(2024) Święcka, Michalina Maria; Goodwin, Amara; Wilson, Roger; Faculty of Architecture and Design; Berlin International University of Applied SciencesItem Restricted Exploring elements of courtyard houses from around the world and Berlin’s development of urban courtyard blocks(2024) Humajova, Ema; Fischer, Jeanne-Françoise; Staudinger, Lukas; Faculty of Architecture and Design; Berlin International University of Applied SciencesAUTHOR-SUPPLIED ABSTRACT: Berlin's urban landscape reflects the city's history and its many chang- es. Courtyards are essential features of this ͏landscape, offering͏ pe͏ace- ful and communal spaces͏ within the urban environment. These courtyards are a product of Gustav Assmann's architectural concepts and Hobrecht's urban plans, creating a set of guidelines for not only the͏ courtyards but also the urban plans͏ (Borsi 2019). How- ever, their design has become somewhat outdated. The elements that defined the Wilhelminian-style block no lo͏nger͏ serve the same pur- pose͏. The leading proponents for change include changes in climate, living standards, and diverse family struc͏tures. This does not mean that all Berlin courtyards are ͏u͏nused and obso- lete. Many courtyards still provide gr͏een spaces and areas for commu- nity enga͏gement that are valuable to the community. However, some spaces need to be adapted to fit more contemporary needs. This thesis takes inspiration from the courtyard house typology, which offers adaptabl͏e elements suitable for many different contexts and scales. Across different communities, variations of the courtyard house typology show its͏ unique potential for urban design, such as in the context of Berlin. By integrating elements found in courtyar͏d hous͏es into Berlin's urban fabric, this thesis attempts to propose design solutions that address Berlin's current and future urban living challenges. The goal is to re- vitalise Berlin's courtyards, transforming them into spaces improving the quality of life for the residents and contributing towards a more connected urban environment. 7 Fig. 1 A photograph of the Heckmann courtyard, a residential courtyard in Berlin that has been adapted to host a cafe and a community area.
