Item Restricted Deceptive hues : raising awareness of dichromatic color blindness for a more inclusive design process(2020) Al-Attar, Nadeen; Hillmann-Regett, Jan; Lehr, Jakob; bachelor thesis in Graphic Design"Color blindness, a condition in which people see less vibrantly or fewer color variations, affects almost 5 percent of the entire world population. Despite this being a fairly common condition, it is rarely considered in many designs. As a result, some designs become difficult to read or understand depending on certain design elements. This research addresses the different color perception of color blind people and how it, in turn, affects their perception of design. Most of this research is based on a few conducted interviews with both colorblind people and non-colorblind designers. An online survey was also conducted on color contrast to test whether or not some colorblind design elements improve designs for non-colorblind viewers as well. The results show how designs can be improved through colorblind design and how the different perception of color blind people can affect their view of certain designs. This research also tackles the different uses of color and how the less abstract ones can be adapted for colorblindness. The practical part of this thesis is in the form of an educational interactive exhibition raising awareness of color blindness for a more inclusive design process. Its aim is to educate designers on how color blind people perceive color, and the impact this has on their perception of design. Due to the time frame, the scope of this exhibition is an advertising poster series and three interactive exhibits all implementing the research findings."Item Restricted The impact of colors on orphans' psychological development using interior design elements(2019) Duwederi, Lana; Ebert, Carola; Martín, Javier; Faculty of Architecture and Design; Berlin International University of Applied Sciences"[...] an orphanage or any space should provide healthy interior spaces which offer a sense of security and safety. These interior spaces should be able to provoke children's creativity and the ability to innovate in order to maximize their youth. Also, the orphanage should provide the children with all that they need to prepare them for a better future and to make up for their lost childhood during the war. However, the problem is how interior design can be used to provide or provoke a healthy environment for children in distress. More specifically, how the use of colors can be implemented appropriately to suit the needs of these orphan kids. How the link between interior spatial designs (tangible) affects children's psychological behavior (intangible), solves a social issue and spreads awareness of it. In order to solve the problem, one should ask the correct question to find a proper solution. In this case, the question is: 'What are the psychological effects of colors on children?, and how can these effects be used in the design of home-like interior spaces to improve children's psychological behavior and make them feel safe?' [...] In order to create a sense of belonging when designing an orphanage, it is firstly essential to understand the psychology behind each color and its impact on each side of the brain and how this affects children´s behavior. Each color should be assigned according to the interior space function and what kind of children's behavior this space is meant to stimulate. The purpose of this literature review is to cultivate an understanding of problems associated with the residents and staff of an orphanage, and to comprehend the effects that the design of the interior environment plays in the psychological health of those occupants. Throughout this literature review, the focus will be placed on the needs of children of all ages, in an orphanage within an interior environment, as well as the effects that interior design has on the experience of children living the orphanage. The main aspect of interior design that was chosen for this study is colors, and how colors have an indirect effect on children's skill development and social intelligence. Moreover, how colors can heal and provide a peaceful environment for children, and the possibility of them using colors to learn and experiment their early stages of development."Item Restricted The influence of interior design on children's psychology in paediatric health zones(2020) Kamal, Fatima; Ebert, Carola; Larsen, Sigurd; bachelor thesis in Interior Design"This thesis aims to study the positive influence of interior design on the psychological well-being of children occupying paediatric health zones. [...] There are a lot of design aspects that need to be taken into account when considering children's different needs in a space, such as: functionality, health, proportion, aesthetics, etc. However this research focuses on the psychological aspect which plays an important role in interior design especially when the target occupants are children and the target spaces are healthcare facilities, since children need more attention to improve their psychological development through their childhood, and paediatric healthcare facilities are considered to be uncomfortable places for children, full of fear caused by the unfamiliar environment and the lack of information, and thus need more attention from interior designers. Hamstech institute's blog stated that Interior design has a major influence on human psychology by affecting the occupants' mood, behavior and well being. There is a wide range of interior design elements and factors that shape a space, and each one of them is guided by the psychology of the space, that eventually creates a bond between the occupants of the space and its environment (2018). The aim of this paper is to study the positive influence of interior design on children's psychological well-being by showing how color, light and spaciousness influence children's experiences in paediatric health zones, to be able to provide strategies of application of the chosen design elements to the interior spaces."
