Item Restricted A School Design for the Unknown Future : A System of Flexibility and Adaptability(2022) Julia Hafez; Aquilar, Giorgia; Martín, Javier; Faculty of Architecture and Design; Berlin International University of Applied SciencesAI-GENERATED ABSTRACT: Abstract: This thesis explores the concept of flexibility and adaptation in school buildings to understand how they adjust to change. The research aims to answer two main questions: how are school buildings subjected to change, and what role does interior design play in their adaptability? The study utilizes a qualitative methodology to examine the historical development of educational structures and collect data on change variables. The concept of flexibility and adaptability is defined and their benefits and implementation in interior spaces are explored. Four flexibility design projects are analyzed to showcase different approaches, and a design project created in relation to the research is also examined. The findings contribute to understanding the importance of flexibility in school buildings and the role of interior design in promoting adaptability. The author's personal experiences and insights as a student and young professional in various student housing typologies serve as the main inspiration for this research. The ability to personalize and adapt living spaces has a significant impact on students' sense of comfort and belonging, turning functional spaces into dwellings that feel like home. The research investigates how interior design can enrich students' lived experiences in student accommodations by incorporating flexibility and adaptability. By studying the current trends and limitations in student housing design, the thesis aims to contribute to the larger conversation about creating student dwellings that go beyond mere shelter, but spaces that students can truly call their own. Practical insights provided in this research can assist interior designers and architects in designing student housing that fosters a sense of comfort, security, and a strong connection to the living environment. Research clearly shows how the construction industry generates severe damage to the environment, and how the generation of demolition waste is a source of wasted natural and economic resources. This study aims to unfold the current problem in the construction industry and offer an alternative to the way we currently design and build. The design aims to cover sustainability, flexibility, and circularity. We must rethink the way we use space and the resources that are located in it. Keywords: population growth, construction industry, sustainability, flexibility, circularity, natural resources, demolition waste, design, resource utilizationItem Restricted Mobile Interior Spaces and Their Connection to Nature(2023) Anna Borbála Jánosi; Martín, Javier; Starck, Adrian von; Faculty of Architecture and Design; Berlin International University of Applied SciencesAUTHOR-SUPPLIED ABSTRACT: Abstract In today's urbanized world, many individuals seek a profound connection with nature to find solace from city life. Mobile homes offer a solution to this need, allowing for a more flexible and adaptable lifestyle. This research explores the connection between mobile spaces and nature, drawing upon the ancient roots of nomadism and the desire for freedom, flexibility, adventure, and a connection with nature. By analyzing case studies and research findings, the study emphasizes the importance of interior architecture in creating domestic mobile spaces that foster a strong connection with the surrounding natural environment. Key design considerations include strategic openings, minimalistic use of materials, and flexible furniture to optimize space utilization and accommodate changing needs. The study showcases various examples of mobile spaces that successfully integrate with nature, highlighting the potential for creating transformative experiences and providing a sanctuary for individuals seeking a profound connection with the natural world. Overall, interior architecture plays a significant role in designing mobile spaces that prioritize a connection with nature, enabling individuals to embrace a mobile lifestyle while still enjoying the comforts of their homes in a well-designed and integrated interior. These individuals implement their own ideas and skills to the host country, they offer their flexibility and labor to diversify and help out with labor market shortages. According to OECD (2010), migrants are more eager to participate in entrepreneurial activities than locals, and these activities do not portray only traditional ethnic businesses anymore but rather large enterprises that are greatly affecting their respective industries. These transformations from the old to the new can also be seen in the context of enterprise digitalisation and digital migrant entrepreneurs who have used technology to transform the physical attributes of their traditional enterprise into digital ones (Andrejuk, 2022). The aim of this thesis is to further explore the concept of "migrant entrepreneurship", while at the same time exploring the drivers of a successful migrant enterprise, the challenges they face, and the success factors behind a migrant's adaptation into the host country. Drawing on qualitative research, the paper produces answers to the two research questions by elaborating on the different conditions a migrant has to follow when building a business, and also by emphasizing the effect of digitalisation on migrant enterprises. The results show that the access to essential conditions is different for migrants versus local entrepreneurs. Moreover, crowdfunding, digital finance, and digital technologies help alleviate the existing constraints that migrants face. The analysis is based on semi-structured interviews with 13 migrant entrepreneurs residing in Albania, Germany, and the US.
