| dc.description.abstract | Going from a square thinking society like it is in Guatemala to a more free, open-minded one like it is in Berlin, is a huge change for a person. As adulthood and responsibility show their face, we become more and more conscious about how we have always made choices but now they affect us even more because we are leaving our family environment. We are less de- pendent on our parents and more on ourselves. We need to be responsible for what we do and as a consequence, be more aware about decisions we take even if we are consciously or unconsciously aware of anything which makes this decision making more difficult that it actually is. "Don't let that hurt child make your grown up decisions" Kylie Sonique Love - Trans Drag Queen One way to deal with these traumas is through meditation. A practice that has existed for thousands of years, with its roots in India and looked down upon in western culture for years despite meditation being researched and reaching the masses during the 1960's with the Hippie Movement. Howev- er, obtaining a popularity increase in recent times especially with apps like Headspace, the change of mentality in Gen Z and Millenials and a higher acceptance in society. As a student of a B.A. in Graphic Design and Visual Communication I be- lieve there is an association between the use of new visual communication elements and composition and the way people perceive meditation and mindfulness. In this case, certain elements like mandalas, the typography used in book covers and other semiotic elements are stepping aside and giving way to elements more accepted in western culture. Therefore de- mystifying both topics and allowing them to be better understood by a so- ciety that used to link them with the treatment for mental health patients. Design has the power to influence people's perception of any topic. After all "it's not what you say, it's how you say it". However, the principles of design are the same worldwide but even then, cultures around the world do not share the same point of view all the time. It takes an understanding of these principles and the culture/society where they will be applied to for a successful design to adequately adapt to cultural contexts serving a clear purpose and making life easier and better. This thesis has as a goal to provide an insight into the perspective of west- erners towards the world of meditation and their graphic design and visual communication. And to provide an improved solution for better commu- nication based on design theory and scientific data on mindfulness and meditation. Answering the question of "How graphic design and visual com- munication impacts people's willingness to learn and practice meditation and mindfulness?" | en |
