Abstract
"Countries with a high trade deficit accumulate large quantities of unused shipping containers whose return to origin is not economical. Costa Rica is also a primary destination for asylum seekers from Latin America and therefore needs to find solutions for fast and cost-effective social housing construction. This research suggests repurposing these 'One-Way-Used' containers as a construction material for social housing projects. It proposes solutions for optimizing the limited interior space and handling the tropical climate. Despite the unique characteristics of construction based on a 'steel box,' social housing with containers seams feasible and economical. The approach is validated by analyzing several case studies and by creating a concrete design proposal."
